Content Site or Ecommerce IMPORTANT: If you haven't claimed your free site yet, click here to get hosting and your free site now because this entire step explains how to use that site. Content or Ecommerce? One of the decisions you will make on your own or with the advice of your startup specialist is whether or not you will create a Content Site or an Ecommerce Site. On a Content Site, you will only be creating useful content (articles, videos, etc) for people who are interested in that niche. You will create fans and readers and you'll naturally attract a lot of traffic from the search engines. The money will be made by selling advertising on the site (which is easy with services such as Google Adsense which we'll explain later). On an Ecommerce Site most of the attention of the site will focus on making sales. Content Site - Focus is content and money is made by selling ads on the site. Ecommerce Site - Focus is products that are sold. In the fashion industry, here is an example of each type of site. As you can see, the Delias site focuses on selling dresses and other fashion items. It's an Ecommerce Site. For every visitor who goes there, the goal is to sell a dress, a pair of jeans, etc. Zappos is another example of an Ecommerce site. They sell shoes online: Here is an example of a fashion Content Site. We drew in arrows to show you where the advertisements are. There are more ads further down the page, and the owner of this site makes money by showing those ads. Whether or not you create a Content Site or an Ecommerce Site depends on a few things. Here are reasons to make a Content Site: If there is no clear product to sell in your niche but there is a lot of interest and traffic. If you prefer writing and creating content over dealing with the business of suppliers, shipments and customer service. If you want to use your site to supplement your career. For example, a personal trainer in Los Angeles could start a fitness site with helpful content and use that to get attention and clients nationwide. A Content Site is a good way to get started and later on you can release a product to your fan base. Many Ecommerce Sites were originally Content Sites actually! Here are reasons to start with an Ecommerce Site: You are ready to handle the business side of fulfillment, shipping and customer support. If most of the traffic in the niche is from people looking for people to buy. For example, lots of searches for "summer dresses" might not mean the searchers are ready to buy a dress online. Maybe they are looking for style ideas before going to the store. But searches for buy summer dresses are people looking to buy now. Your Supplier you'll need a supplier. Some places to find suppliers: If you're going to start an e-Commerce website.
